Indigenous and Local Knowledge, Values, and
Practices for Nature and the Planet
October 23, 2024, 6pm
Upland Brewery Wood Shop
Professor Brondizio will provide an overview of an exhibit that recently opened at the IU Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. The current accelerating global environmental crisis has heightened awareness of the knowledge, values, and practices of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities. Indigenous Peoples’ contributions to both nature and society are wide-ranging and have been increasingly recognized in both scientific and Indigenous-led research. These contributions include various ways of identifying and managing landscapes and waterscapes; producing food and materials, while maintaining agrobiodiversity that supports a significant sector of the global population; monitoring the health of local environments; restoring ecosystems or preventing their destruction; and offering alternative ways of conceptualizing the relationship between nature and humanity. The exhibit explores these contributions.
