December 11, 2013, 5:30-8pm at Hacienda (186 Easy Shopping Place): Annual Holiday Mixer

November 13, 2013, 5:30-8pm at McCarthy's on the Riverwalk (333 Nibco Pkwy): A discussion about the current fuel tax structure that will include a history of fuel economy, provide possible options to equate use of the roads to payment of the repair and replacement of them, and provide an opportunity to discuss what local, state, and federal legislators should consider as viable options. A little background is that the current format is not sustainable given the increase in fuel economy, hybrid, and other fuels being used, and a much discussed fuel tax was implemented by Elkhart County several years ago as a way to further enhance funding sources that had dwindled through the years. Faced with an ever-changing price of fuel and an instability in funneling the funds from the federal to local levels, an open discussion is warranted.

Come learn "what it takes" for a home to be reviewed, verified, and possibly certified "Green".

August 14, 2013, 5:30-8pm at Harrison Landing (600 S Main): Andy Harlow, First Federal Savings Bank, will be presenting about their "Go Green Loan". FFSB has a loan option that, meeting their criteria in energy efficiency, can qualify a loan applicant to a reduction in their rate, such that it is lower than any other available. Putting your money into efficiencies up-front can save you much more in the long run.

July 10, 2013, 5:30-8pm at Harrison Landing (600 S Main): Burne Miller will be presenting and discussing some of the sustainable practices he encountered on his recent month-long stay in Austria.

September 12, 2012, 5:30-8pm at  McCarthy's on the Riverwalk (333 Nibco Pkwy): Burne Miller will lead the discussion concerning "Green Drinks" viewpoint of attempts from various groups/interests to promote or block "energy projects".  Project No Project assesses the broad range of energy projects that are being stalled, stopped, or outright killed nationwide due to "NIMBY" (Not In My Back Yard) or "Cave" (Citizens Against Virtually Everything) activism, a broken permitting process, and a system that allows seemingly limitless challenges by opponents of development.

One of the most surprising findings from the catalog of projects is that is seems just as difficult to build a wind farm in the US as it is to build a coal-fired power plant.  Roughly 45% of the challenged projects that were identified are renewable energy projects.

If all "special interest" groups oppose all projects for their own special interests, then how does anyone/EVERYONE make any appreciable impact, in a national sense, towards sustainability?  Where does it need to end?  An attempt at a sensible discussion about what can, at times, seem like a broken system.  It just depends on which side you look at or if you can look at it from another side.  Let's discuss, with no exclamation points, please.

August 8, 2012, 5:30-8pm at La Esperanza (601 E Jackson): Tim Neese, Solid Waste Management District, will be speaking about what the SWMD does to encourage reduction of waste disposal into landfills and how the SWMD can work with companies to seek opportunties to reduce/reuse/recycle and increase efficiencies within their companies.

July 11, 2012, 5:30-8pm at Imagine Lake (28222 Pine Lake Street, Edwardsburg, MI - Directions from Elkhart via Google Maps: http://goo.gl/maps/mkau): Burne Miller (owner) and Terry Herschberger (architect/builder of 1-2-1 Designs) will be discussing the green home building process from various standpoints.  The home is currently under construction, so please dress with appropriate footwear.  Beverages will be provided.  Please bring a light finger food for a pot-luck adventure and lawn chairs for seating.  We will be continuing the normally implied "Adults Only" since this is a construction site.  We are encouraging carpooling.
