About the Presentation:
Dan Volkers, Manager of the McHenry County Farm Bureau, will present this program about the first bioreactor in McHenry County. With the assistance of an Illinois Farm Bureau Nutrient Stewardship Grant and in partnership with the McHenry County Farm Bureau, a bioreactor was built on McHenry County Conservation District (MCCD) property in 2020, to remove nitrate from water flowing off a 45 acre tiled drained agricultural field. Since the spring of 2025, MCCD volunteers have begun taking samples at the inlet and outlet of the system, which were then delivered to research partners at the University of Illinois with the help of the McHenry County Farm Bureau. Since monitoring began on this bioreactor, 545 lbs of nitrogen (from May of 2021 to August of 2023) that would have otherwise gone downstream.
Volkers grew up on a grain and livestock farm in the Northwest corner of Illinois. In 1999, he graduated from Illinois State University and began his career with Farm Bureau. In his position, he oversees the day-to-day operations, programs, and related activities of the organization. He also provides management services to the County Farm Bureau's Agricultural Education Foundation and its Political Action Committee.
