Update on Offshore Wind

We are delighted to have members of Ørsted’s project management and onshore construction team provide an update on the progress of establishing the Skipjack Wind offshore wind project in federal waters off Delaware’s coast.  We welcome …

Brady Walker, Mid-Atlantic Market Manager, will walk us through an overview of where the Skipjack project is in the development process, Maryland's Public Service Commission process for reviewing offshore wind projects, and how offshore wind projects are awarded.

Matt Drew, Onshore Infrastructure Construction Manager, will tell us about the operation and maintenance of the project on land, and how the cable is landed in Delaware and connected to the grid, and about the potential for jobs and the supply chain created by building out this wind project.

About Adam ~

Adam is a program manager for the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control. As part of the DNREC Division of Waste and Hazardous Substances, he supports waste management and reduction in Delaware, including permit compliance, technical assistance, regulation development, legislative reporting and other activities related to solid waste facilities. In addition, he manages Delaware's Universal Recycling program which provides outreach support and technical assistance to residents and the regulated community. Prior to joining DNREC, he held various roles related to environmental education and outreach focused on recycling and sustainability. He earned a Bachelor of Science in environmental economics from Cook College, Rutgers and a Master of Science in sustainability management studies from New England College. Adam lives in Felton, Del. where he tries not to yell at his neighbors to “Recycle Right!” on pick-up day.

Please send questions you have for Adam to me, Jill at jill.gaumer@gmail.com and I will forward them to Adam so he can weave your questions into his answers.  And certainly, there will be ample time to ask questions that you think of as he presents.

Green Drinks

NOW ON THE THIRD MONDAY

June 21, 2021 -   6:30 PM to 8 PM

Our Speaker - Rachel Burch

Rachel Burch is a PhD student in Civil and Environmental Engineering. She is working under Drs. Michael Chajes and Daniel Cha to conduct this research.

Her topic:  A group of researchers at the University of Delaware, led by Drs. Michael Chajes and Daniel Cha, is conducting research on aerobic bio-digesters for the disposal of food wastes. These digesters use a combination of microorganisms, warm water, mechanical mixing, and oxygen to break down food wastes into a liquid which can potentially be repurposed for biogas and/or fertilizers. The application of these digesters presents a promising sustainable food waste disposal option for individual establishments such as restaurants, grocery stores, cafeterias, etc. because it is small enough to be implemented on-site; the University currently has two of these digesters implemented in it's own Caesar Rodney Dining Hall. During this presentation, we will talk more about this technology, its potential applications, and the research we are conducting in our lab to explore resource recovery pathways from food wastes.

At CCAN, she has returned to her lifelong love of the environment. Born in Baltimore, she attended the U of MD on a Marine Biology scholarship and went on to receive an MBA- Economics from the Johns Hopkins University. Our speaker, Sabrina Fu, is a scientist who has always worked on practical problems – from synthesis of alcohols from waste gases to remediation of nuclear, mixed, and hazardous wastes to watershed management to program director for environmental and waste management.

Sabrina began her career thinking that science was the key to solving societal problems. But science can only identify the problems and offer some viable technological help.  She found this with alternative energy sources, nuclear waste remediation work, and with climate mitigation.  Society wants science to do magic.  The magic comes in what we decide to do as a society.  Help us heal climate and nation with a cornerstone legislation called the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act.

The second Monday of the month – note the change

Public · Hosted by Green Drinks Delaware, Plastic Free Delaware, Preservation Delaware and Dee Durham - New Castle County Council, Citizens’ Climate Lobby

Online Event

Guest speaker, Maya van Rossum, will suggest a new agenda for environmental advocacy that can empower every American to mobilize for constitutional change, including in Delaware.  She notes, “In the decades-long fight for a cleaner environment, we have been fighting a losing battle. The sad truth is, our laws are designed to accommodate pollution, rather than prevent it. The solution is to bypass the laws and turn to the ultimate authority: our state and federal constitutions.”

Maya van Rossum is the founder of Green Amendments For The Generations, a grassroots non-profit organization inspiring the nationwide movement to secure constitutional recognition and protection of environmental rights in every state and ultimately at the federal level. She is also the leader of the Delaware Network.  For more than 26 years, she has led this group which is a regional nonprofit organization that uses advocacy, science, and litigation to protect the Delaware River and its tributaries.
